Episode #31 - Helen Owens
January 30, 2019 Helen Owens

Today's Life's Black Belt guest is Helen Owens.  Author of "Finding Our She-Compass: 15 Life Lessons For Women Voyaging toward Restoration, Reconstruction, and Renewal."

This is an extraordinary story, that's a must-listen-to episode!  Helen is an incredible human and someone that empowers women to find happiness, confidence and beauty in their life again.

Helen takes us back to when she was a child growing up in the ghetto.   She discusses losing her father at 11 years old and at the same age she began loosing her hair in large patches.  Her family couldn't afford a doctor to find out what it was.  Later in life she found out it was Alopecia Areata.

This led to extreme bullying from kids in school and especially one girl in particular.  Helen shares a deeply emotional story of how this bully impacted her life still to this day.

Doing everything she could to cover her bald spots, Helen broke down one day on her steps and then fate stepped in.  "Granny" as she was known to the neighborhood, was an elderly lady that told Helen she was going to help her and brought her inside.

Here she revealed photo albums with pages of celebrities showing off their gorgeous hair, which turned out to be wigs, made by of course, Granny.

She taught Helen how to make wigs to cover her head.  While learning to make wigs, Helen also struggled learning in school because she had Dyslexia.  Then Helen's life took a major turn when she became a Teen mom at 15 years old and Mom of two by 17.

We continue through her story from getting her license to do hair through modern day where Helen is one of the most successful and premiere wig makers in the country.  Making wigs for people with health conditions through A list celebrities.

She founded "She-Compass" which is an Online Community to Inspire, Uplift and Empower All Women to Acheive Our Greatest Potential.
